Marquette ranks in the top ten for post-season invitations. The team played their first game in 1916. At that time Marquette basketball fans would gather in small numbers. The team was not part of any conference. In fact, Marquette was independent for the first seventy-three years. They would come to join the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1989. It would be three short seasons before the team would be part of the Great Midwest Conference. From 1916 through 2011, the team has gone to the NCAA tournament over two dozen times. They would go all the way to win the 1977 NCAA Tournament. Al McGuire led the team that season.
Marquette Golden Eagles at Bradley Center
Marquette tickets for their Bradley Center games are on sale now. Prior to calling the Bradley Center home, the Golden Eagles played at the US Cellular Arena, a venue just one block south. At that time, the venue had a more collegiate feel. The Bradley Center holds just shy of 19,000 fans. It can get very loud when current and former Marquette students get fired up.
The Golden Eagles were once called the Warriors. The name was changed fifteen years ago. The team did not go back to their first name, the "Golden Avalanche." This time a new name was in order, and the university president settled upon the Golden Eagles. Since that time Marquette tickets increased in demand.
Marquette Basketball Tournament Highlights
Marquette has been lucky enough to have players like Bo Ellis, Dwyane Wade, Travis Diener, and Dominic James on their roster. When Al McGuire led the team to a tournament victory 34 years ago, he recruited a "no-name" bunch of kids that had enough talent to win the National Championship. In 1974 Marquette was in the final game of that same tournament, and lost to NC State. Buzz Williams has been head coach for Marquette since 2008. In the first three years as head coach, the team has gone on to play in the NCAA tournament. No matter how well the team plays, Marquette tickets sell out for the big games.
