Summerfest Event History
Since the early 1970s, the event has been centrally located near the Milwaukee skyline, just along the shore of Lake Michigan. One can expect crowds of up to 100,000 people per day. It's more than music. There are so many things to do at Summerfest! Over the decades, the main stage had been moved from the south end of the festival grounds to the north, and back again. As the crowds grew larger and larger, something had to be done to accommodate the biggest acts. The solution was to build a state-of-the-art, outdoor venue with a roof and room for 25,000 people. The American Family Insurance Amphitheater was built in 1987. There are reserved seats for every headline show at Summerfest, and general lawn seating is available for most nights. The latest upgrade and name change came in 2020. There are better sight lines, more bathrooms, and concession stands. This venue requires a separate admission ticket, but most people will tell you that it's well worth it. The Beach Boys were the first band to hit the stage, and since that time there have been hundreds of shows performed at the "Am-Fam Amp."
