Kinnick Stadium History

Kinnick Stadium has been the home of the Iowa Hawkeyes since 1929. It took just seven months for construction crews to complete the stadium. At that time, the seating capacity was 53,000. 43 years after the first game, the stadium was named after Nile Kinnick. Kinnick was a war hero and won the Heisman Trophy in 1939. 

The venue has been updated multiple times, first starting in 1956. At that time, additional end zone seats were added. In 1983, Iowa expanded the end zones once again. Press boxes were upgraded in the 1990s. The biggest renovation took place from 2017 to 2019. As of now, the stadium holds 69,250 fans for Hawkeyes football games.
