His 2017 recruiting class was decent, ranking 48th in the country. The class was highlighted by a trio of four-star recruits. The first two, from Miami, Florida, were defensive end Owen Carney, and wide receiver Carmani Green. The third was another wide receiver, from Chicago though, Ricky Smalling. Carmani Green didn’t play much a year ago, but Smalling led the team with 31 catches for 510 yards as a freshman. Expect both players to take a big jump next season. The question is who will throw to them. The team’s top two quarterbacks from a year ago are both gone. Jeff George Jr. is going to transfer and Chayce Crouch is retiring from football. That leaves just Cam Thomas as the only quarterback with game experience and he was just a freshman last year who was forced into action before he was ready. Thomas is the leader by default, but the competition is wide open at the moment. Slowly, but surely, the Illini are getting better.

The Illinois Fighting Illini are coming off yet another losing season, finishing 2-10, and winless in Big Ten play. Overall they are just 10-26 in their last three seasons, have not played in a bowl game since 2014, and have not finished above .500 since 2011. To turn their program around, they hired former Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith to the same position prior to the start of the 2016 season. As stated above, his first two seasons have not gone well, but in the college game, a coach must be given time to recruit properly and build his own team. Lovie Smith is doing that.
