Camp Randall Football and Stadium Development

Camp Randall can be traced back to 1895 when the football field was named after the Civil War training camp. (Hence the name.) Governor Alexander Randall was once a governor and Postmaster General. When the military training camp was up for development, veterans pressured the government to keep it out of private hands. The state of Wisconsin bought the land and provided it to the University of Madison. From there, it became the track and field grounds for the college. In 1917, the first concrete sections were built, after finding the wooden bleachers too difficult to maintain. In stages, the stadium was built up from 11,900 seats to today's 80,321.

The natural grass of Camp Randall was phased out in 1968 and turned into artificial turf. The Badgers football team found themselves playing on various types of turf up until 2003 when they settled on "field turf."

Aside from Badgers football games, the stadium has hosted concerts over the years, but that has been phased out as of 1997. The last concert to be held in Madison was the Rolling Stones. The stadium is part of an athletic complex, which includes the U.W. Fieldhouse and the Dave McClain Athletic Facility.
