The Kohl Center, which opened in 1998, is indeed multi-functional. It is the home to the Wisconsin Badger’s men’s basketball team, men’s hockey team, and women’s basketball team. The Kohl Center also hosts numerous concerts and special events. The Kohl Center is the main venue for the WIAA girls and boys state basketball tournaments as well as the individual wrestling state tournament. President Barack Obama spoke to a crowd of over 17,000 at the Kohl Center before the democratic primary in 2008. The Kohl Center also hosts the Varsity Band Spring Concert in which the average attendance is 25,500 per year.
The special types of Kohl Center seating break down as follows: The student center is located to the left of Gate C, near Regent Street. The student section takes up three upper-level sections numbered 314, 315, and 316, three mid-level sections 214 through 216, and five lower-level sections 113 through 117. Wisconsin Badgers students are known as some of the loudest in college sports, which helps drive the Badgers great success in their own venue. The media takes up section 208. The family seating is on the other side of the building, near Dayton Street. Family seating at the Kohl Center takes up seven sections in total: Sections 301, 302, 303, 304, 326, 327, and 328.
What the Kohl Center is most known for is for being the home of Wisconsin Men’s basketball. Since the Badgers moved into the Kohl Center, they have one of the strongest home win-loss records in the NCAA. The highlight of the Wisconsin Badgers' home-field success was a 38-game winning streak that ended in 2005. It took the number one ranked team in the nation to break that winning streak.
Seating is such at the Kohl Center that two overhanging balconies allow fans the best view possible. The Kohl Center is the first arena in the United States to use a variable rise system for end seating. Because of the differences in the size of the basketball court and hockey rink, seats must be mobile horizontally to fit tighter around the court and vertically to accommodate its different heights. The Kohl Center staff meets this challenge with a system of inner risers that includes sliding trays and a lift system at both end lines. This lift raises 750 seats a total of seven feet. The result is an arena that feels dedicated to just the sport that is out on the floor. In addition, there is a state-of-the-art sound system, as well as TV monitors in the suites and at the concession stands at the Kohl Center.
